5 workplace items you didn’t know you could recycle

While it’s great that your business is good at recycling paper and plastic, there is so much more you can do to reduce your company’s carbon footprint. Many items from the workplace unnecessarily end up in landfill because people don’t realise they can be reused or recycled. It’s not too late to make changes; here are five items that you might not have known were recyclable.

1. Ink cartridges

After the coffee machine, the printer is one of the most frequently used office devices. Once an old printer cartridge runs out, the natural response is to throw the plastic device into the bin. While they are only small, a build-up of cartridges in landfill is economically damaging and completely unnecessary. Recycle these cartridges or bring them to a printer manufacturer where they can take care of them and maybe give you a future discount on printer ink.

2. Fluorescent lightbulbs

These light sources contain mercury that can pollute the ground if they are improperly disposed of. It’s easy to just throw them in a general waste bin, but the most efficient option is to recycle the light bulbs when the time comes for a replacement.

3. Electronics

E-waste is a growing problem and each year people throw away millions of tonnes of electrical equipment; offices and businesses are often the biggest culprits. More often than not, these items can be dismantled and the individual parts either reused or recycled by professional waste services.

4. Food waste

For companies who work in catering or just office workers waiting for lunchtime to roll around, food waste is inevitable. You might be used to just throwing away the remains in general waste but recycling the excess is just as easy. Not only is it better for the environment, but separating food waste for recycling can save your business money as you will require fewer general waste bin collections.

5. Furniture

Businesses under refurbishment needlessly throw tables and chairs into the skip rather than recycling them. Often, they are composed of chemicals and plastics that can be hazardous and polluting if disposed of improperly.
